The moment the herd decides to cross
East Africa

The moment the herd decides to cross

A column of wildebeest reaches the Mara River bank, hesitates, then plunges in. Crocodiles wait below the surface. From mid-July to late October, this is the scene that draws travellers from every continent — and no two crossings are the same.

Kilimanjaro at six in the morning

Kilimanjaro at six in the morning

Drive out of Amboseli before dawn and you stand a real chance of seeing Africa's highest peak — vast, snow-capped, impossibly close — rising over a herd of elephants in the early light. By midday the summit is usually gone behind cloud.

A north that feels like a different country

A north that feels like a different country

Samburu is drier, quieter and stocked with species that simply don't exist further south: reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk. It rewards the traveller who pushes beyond the obvious and wants safari without the crowds.

Qué ver en East Africa — Kenya zona a zona

Kenya covers an extraordinary range of landscapes and ecosystems — savannah, volcanic lakes, semi-arid scrubland and tropical coast — all reachable from Nairobi within a few hours by air or road. These are the areas worth knowing before you choose.

Masai Mara
01

Masai Mara

Kenya's best-known reserve shares an open border with Tanzania's Serengeti, which is why the Great Migration pours through here each year between July and October. Resident wildlife — lions, cheetahs, leopards, hippos, elephants — makes it worth visiting outside migration season too.

The Mara Triangle section of the reserve offers some of the best vantage points for river crossings. Plan for at least two full game-drive days; single-day visits from Nairobi rarely do it justice.

Amboseli
02

Amboseli

Around 240 km south of Nairobi, Amboseli is where you come for elephants and Kilimanjaro. The park's large herds move freely across the plains, and on a clear morning — most likely in the dry months — Africa's highest peak looms behind them in a scene that feels almost cinematic.

Early-morning game drives are essential: cloud typically builds on the summit by late morning. January and February offer some of the clearest skies of the year.

Samburu
03

Samburu

North of Mount Kenya, Samburu sits in semi-arid bush country where the wildlife roster changes dramatically. Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich and the gangly gerenuk are common here and rare or absent everywhere else in Kenya.

Because it attracts fewer visitors than the Mara, game drives feel genuinely unhurried. It pairs well with a Masai Mara stay for travellers who want real variety in a single trip.

Rift Valley Lakes
04

Rift Valley Lakes

Lake Nakuru, around two hours from Nairobi, holds both black and white rhino as well as lions, leopards and, in season, vast numbers of flamingos along its shores. Lake Naivasha, a short drive away, is calmer: boat trips, hippos and walking on Crescent Island.

The Rift Valley lakes make a natural day trip or overnight from Nairobi, and they combine easily with any multi-park itinerary heading to or from the Mara.

Tsavo
05

Tsavo

Split into East and West, Tsavo together forms one of the largest game reserves on earth. Its defining feature is the red elephant — animals whose skin is permanently stained by the iron-rich volcanic soil. The landscape is more rugged and remote than the Mara, which suits travellers after space rather than density of sightings.

Tsavo East and West are also closer to the coast, making them a logical stop between Nairobi and Mombasa.

Kenya Coast
06

Kenya Coast

Mombasa and the beaches that stretch north and south of it — Diani, Watamu, Malindi — give East Africa its Indian Ocean chapter. Diani Beach is the go-to for soft white sand; Watamu Marine National Park rewards snorkellers and divers, with best visibility in January and February.

The coast works well as a final few days after a safari circuit, letting you decompress before the long-haul flight home.

When to travel to East Africa

Kenya's wildlife is present year-round; the question is what you want to prioritise.

June to October
Peak safari season: dry conditions, thin vegetation and concentrating wildlife. July–October is the window for Great Migration river crossings in the Masai Mara. Busiest and most expensive period.
January to February
Second dry season: warm, clear skies and fewer visitors than peak. Best for Amboseli's Kilimanjaro views and excellent game in the Mara and Samburu at lower rates.
November to December
Short rains arrive — brief afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours. Lush landscape, great birdwatching as European migrants arrive, and noticeably quieter parks.
March to May
Long rainy season. Some tracks become difficult, and several camps close. The upside: bird life is exceptional and the landscape is at its greenest. Not the easiest time for first-time safari-goers.

Frequently asked questions about travelling to East Africa

Do I need a visa for Kenya from the UK or US?
Since January 2024, Kenya replaced its visa with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). Both UK and US citizens must apply online at etakenya.go.ke before departure — there's no eTA on arrival. Apply at least 72 hours before you fly; processing typically takes around three days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your stay.
Is there a direct flight from the US to Kenya?
Yes — Kenya Airways operates a daily non-stop service from New York JFK to Nairobi (NBO), taking around 13.5 hours. Most other US cities connect via a European or Middle Eastern hub, adding a few hours. A Kenya Airways–JetBlue codeshare has also expanded options from North America.
How long is the flight from London to Nairobi?
Direct flights take approximately 8 hours 55 minutes to 9 hours 25 minutes from London Heathrow. British Airways, Kenya Airways and Virgin Atlantic (from Gatwick) all operate non-stop services. Travellers from other UK cities often find it cheaper to connect via a European or Middle Eastern hub.
When is the best time to see the Great Migration river crossings?
The wildebeest typically reach the Masai Mara from Tanzania's Serengeti around July, with river crossings continuing through October before the herds head south again. August and September are the peak months for drama at the Mara River — but crossings are unpredictable and can happen at any point in this window.
How many days should I spend in East Africa?
A short safari of 7–8 days can cover the Masai Mara and one other park (Amboseli or Samburu). Two weeks lets you add the Rift Valley lakes, the northern parks and a few days on the coast. First-timers often underestimate travel time between parks — flying between them rather than driving makes a real difference to comfort and time.
How do I get from Nairobi to the Masai Mara?
A domestic flight from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to one of the Mara airstrips takes around 45 minutes and is the most comfortable option. Road transfers take 5–6 hours depending on the route and condition of the road — viable, but long after an international flight. Most travellers on tighter schedules prefer to fly one way.
What wildlife can I see in Kenya outside migration season?
Resident wildlife — lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, hippos, giraffes — is present year-round across all of Kenya's parks. Amboseli, Samburu and Lake Nakuru don't depend on the migration at all; they're excellent throughout the year. November to April also brings thousands of migratory birds from Europe and Asia.
Can I combine Kenya with Tanzania on one trip?
Yes — and many travellers do. Cross-border air connections from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar are straightforward. A combined Kenya–Tanzania trip works particularly well if you want to follow the Great Migration from the Serengeti into the Mara, or to add Zanzibar's coast to a safari circuit.
